Jean Gunn of 3420 Mekeel Rd, Trumansburg, passed away in the comfort of her home and the presence of her three daughters on Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the age of 83.

Born on March 22, 1927 in Athens, Pennsylvania, Jean was the daughter of Guy and Mae (Weller) Keith.  She graduated from Ithaca High in 1944.  Jean married the love of her life, Norman G. Gunn, on September 15, 1945.  Over the next 55 years together, they raised a family, farmed, ran a construction business, gardened and enjoyed the life they built.  During those years, Jean also worked at the Agway Farm Store in Ithaca as a bookkeeper, retiring in the early 1980s.

Jeanís world revolved around her family.  As matriarch of the family, she took great interest in the lives of her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren, offering them treasured advice.  The family will cherish knitted and crocheted items that she made and will miss the abundance of pies, pickles, and breads that she brought to each family gathering over the years.

Jeanís generosity extended to those in the community.  She was active in the Trumansburg United Methodist Church, dedicating her time and talents to many of their causes, especially the food pantry.  She also enjoyed the friendships developed as a member of the Trumansburg Senior Citizens.  Often, Jean would share her gardening expertise, perennials and handmade items with her friends and other local charities.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Norman, on March 20, 2001; and one brother, Leonard Keith.  She is survived by three daughters, Carol Poston of Duluth, GA, Judy (Ted) Malley of Canandaigua, NY, and Bonnie Gunn (Ed Weatherby) of Interlaken, NY; grandchildren, Cathy (Steve) McGahn of Reno, NV, Ron Preston of Rome, NY, Angie (Eric) Parr of Canandaigua, NY, Matt (Laura) Malley of Albany, NY, Heather (Jeremy) Northrop of Canandaigua, NY, and Renee Preston of Trumansburg, NY; great grandchildren, Cariana, Bryn, Alex, Sydney, Andrew, Elena, Madelyn, Emily, Tyler, Emmah, and Graham; one brother, Carl (Marcia) Keith of Trumansburg, NY; one sister-in-law, Joan Keith of Ithaca, NY; several cousins, nieces and nephews and many close friends.

Jean and her family will forever be grateful for the gentle, loving guidance provided by Dr. Suzanne Anderson, Dr. Timothy Bael, the caring staff at both the Ithaca Medical Group and the Radiation Oncology Department at Cayuga Medical Center, and the gentle souls of Hospice.  The many cards, notes, thoughts, and prayers she received boosted her spirits through her challenging times.

The family will be present to receive friends on Sunday, October 17th from 2-4 pm at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St, Trumansburg.

Services will begin at 10:30 am on Monday, October 18th at the funeral home, with Rev. Dr. Jeff Losey officiating.  Prayers of Committal will follow at Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg.  A reception at the First Presbyterian Chapel in Trumansburg will immediately follow the Prayers of Committal.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a contribution in Jeanís memory are asked to kindly consider the Trumansburg Food Pantry, PO Box 162, Trumansburg, NY 14886; or the Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Co., EMS, PO Box 418, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
