Suzanne Stewart Knight of 111 Pennsylvania Ave, Trumansburg, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at the age of 73, after a valiant uphill battle with the effects of a debilitating stroke suffered two years ago.  She was surrounded by loving family and friends.

Born on May 1, 1937 in Ithaca, Suzanne was the daughter of Edith (Collins) Phillips and the late Charles Stewart.  Suzanne was “Miss Ithaca High,” class of 1955. She attended Ithaca College where she began what was to become a life-long pursuit of music.

With a song in her heart and an amazingly upbeat point of view, Suzanne continually brightened the lives of others. Family and friends were the center of her world and her acceptance and loving appreciation of them were shown without reservation. To Suzanne, the little things were the big things, as was evidenced by countless deeds done for others. Not only did Suzanne shower others with genuine kindness, but she often delighted them with one of her hand-made sewing projects. Suzanne was a talented seamstress.  She took special pleasure in working with her brides to create custom wedding gowns.  In Suzanne's work as a substance abuse counselor, her compassion flowed from a seemingly endless well.  In fact, the only occasion that Suzanne may have seemed adversarial to anyone was when they found themselves opposite her in a game of Scrabble.

Music and performance gave Suzanne the greatest joy.  Throughout her life, Suzanne's gifted voice and easy stage presence gave so many the opportunity to know her.  Her fellow musicians were a part of her family. The music will go on.  Those who knew and loved Suzanne will keep her memory alive each time they offer a helping hand or share a warm smile to brighten another’s day.

Suzanne is survived by her mother, two sons, Shane French (Michelle) and Dakota Potenza (Nana Monaco); her daughters, Barrie Clinton-French (Jeff) and Bridgette French (Bryant Seus); her grandchildren, Brandon, Gabriel, Sophie, and Nico.   She is also survived by her step-mother, Jen Stewart; her step-daughter, Wynter Knight; her sister, Edith Benedict (Ken), her niece and nephews and a community of dear friends.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St, Trumansburg.
