Gertrude Miller of Mecklenburg, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2010, at the age of 87.

Born on September 21, 1923 in Harrison, New York, Gertrude was the daughter of Walter and Elly (Heine) Hollien.  In 1940 she married John Edwin Miller and moved to Mecklenburg, where they built a life together and raised four children.  Gert was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother.  By example, she taught their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that family was life’s number one priority. She was a member of the Mecklenburg United Methodist Church.  Gert owned and operated Wedge Acre Kennels for many years and very much enjoyed working with all the animals and their “parents”.  In her spare time, Gert loved gardening and her flower gardens were spectacular.  She was an excellent cook and baker.  Her family was spoiled by having fresh baked goodies all the time.  She lovingly made clothes for her children, and crocheted, cross-stitched, and quilted countless gifts for family and friends, and also donated items to the Church Bazaar for many years. She was also an avid reader.

In addition to her parents, Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband on November 24, 1990, her brother, Walter Hollien, and son-in-law, Carl Bishop, Jr.  She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Bishop of Lansing, Cathy Miller of Brooktondale and Julie (Dick) Heidt of Dryden; one son, Ed (Sherry) Miller of Kingston, TN; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister-in-law, Frances Furcha, and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, services and interment at Grove Cemetery will be private.

The family asks those who wish to make a contribution in Gertrude’s memory to kindly consider the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Co. Please make check payable to “Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Co.” and mail to: Jonathan Berstein, Secretary, 6300 St. Rt. 227, Trumansburg, NY  14886.
