John V. MoynesJohn V. Moynes, known to his friends as Jack, of Jacksonville, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Friday, May 7, 2010 at the age of 92.

Born on March 8, 1918 in Detroit, Michigan, Jack was the son of Frank and Mary (MacKinnon) Moynes. He attended Michigan State University and received his BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Detroit in 1945. On June 23rd of that same year he married Katherine Lewis Wurzer in Detroit. Jack entered the US Navy on July 23, 1945, faithfully serving his country until receiving an Honorable Discharge on May 2, 1946.

The couple moved to the Ithaca (NY) area in January of 1957, when Jack joined Morse Chain, a division of Borg Warner, as Vice President of Sales.  During his career at Borg Warner he held positions of increasing responsibility including President of Morse Chain and Vice President for the Borg Warner Transportation and Equipment Group.   Upon retirement from Borg Warner, he kept active as the Chairman of the Citizens Savings Bank and this ultimately led to his position as President of the Ithaca Gun Company.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Jack made a positive impact on civic affairs.  Jack was a firm believer in volunteerism to benefit his community. In this belief, he served as trustee of the Tompkins County Library, director of Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce, director of 4-H, director of United Way of Tompkins County, president of the local American Cancer Society and board member and trustee of the YMCA where he spearheaded the efforts to build their current facility.  He regularly participated as a member of the City Club of Ithaca as recently as two weeks ago, and previously he was actively involved with the Ithaca and Trumansburg Rotary Clubs, the Ithaca Museum of the Earth, the Detroit Athletic Club, Ithaca Yacht Club, Cornell University Statler Club, and Friends of Ithaca College.  

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his wife Katherine on August 15, 2000. He is survived by his older brother Frank (Ann) Moynes of Prescott, AZ; and by three daughters, Marian Elizabeth Moynes (John), Mary Margaret (Dennis) Jacobs of Glastonbury, CT, and Katherine Ann Moynes (Mark Pollard) of Killaloe, Ireland; son John F. (Kathleen) Moynes of Annapolis, MD; five grandchildren; and, three great children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00am on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at St. James Church with Rev. William Neumann as celebrant.  Prayers of Committal will follow at St. James Cemetery.

The family will be present to receive friends on Wednesday, May 19th from 6-8 pm at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg.
