James F. "Jim" NicholsJames F. "Jim" Nichols, of 9345 State Rt. 89, Trumansburg, passed away at Strong Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the age of 74 after a brief illness.

Born on November 11, 1935 in Montour Falls, Jim was the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Allen) Nichols. Jim was a 1953 graduate of Odessa Montour School District, where he was an active member of the Future Farmers of America and played baseball.  Following graduation he was a welder at Seneca Engineering in Montour Falls while joining his uncle Howard and aunt Alice Bower on what was known as Spring Stream Farm. After retiring from dairy farming, he was a livestock dealer/hauler for nearly 50 years. He was known for his sharp eye and keen sense of knowledge of the livestock business. In early years of livestock dealing he would travel to livestock auctions in Sennett, Owego, Whitney Point, and Middleburg, PA. In recent years, with his daughter Barb by his side, they traveled to Empire Livestock in Dryden on Mondays, Finger Lakes Livestock Exchange in Canandaigua on Wednesdays and Empire Livestock in Bath on Thursdays. He enjoyed his auction friends as much as he enjoyed his local friends. Early in the morning Jim could be found at one of many local stops such as Chef’s Diner, Falls Tavern, or Camels (later to be known as Ron Dons). Jim loved watching all types of sports and was an avid fan of Sportscenter. He was a Mark Martin fan and rarely missed a NASCAR race. He enjoyed spending time with the members of the Boulder Creek Buck Club and was a past member of the Mechanic's Club in Montour Falls. If you were a friend to our dad, he considered you a friend for life. Our dad was well respected, loved and will be greatly missed by many.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his uncle Howard and aunt Alice “Nanny” Bower. He is survived by three daughters, Barb Kelley (Mike Bergen) of Burdett, Becky Updike of Trumansburg, and Brenda (Matt) Lincoln of Trumansburg; six grandchildren, Elliott Kelley, Nicholas and Ryan Updike, Cody Nichols, Hunter and Kameron Lincoln; cousins Janice Freese of Montour Falls, Ed (Jackie) Saeger of Florida, Ed (Nancy) Allen of Rochester and Dave (Karen) Allen of Mecklenburg; the mother of his daughters, Judy Haviland; and many close friends.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the 7th Floor staff at Strong Memorial Hospital for their exceptional care.

The family will be present to receive friends from 3:00 to 7:00pm on Saturday, January 23, 2010 and from 1:00 to 3:00pm on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg.  Funeral Services will begin at 3:00pm on Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the funeral home. A reception will be held at the American Legion Post #770 in Trumansburg immediately following the service. A private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
