Edward S. Sowards, age 82, resident of Juniper Manor, died at the Hospicare Residence on East King Road in Ithaca on Saturday, September 4, 2010.

Born February 13, 1928 in Geneva, New York, Ed was the son of the late Emzy and Ruth (Updike) Sowards. He proudly served his country in the USArmy, and returned home following an overseas tour. He worked at Egan’s Mobil Station in Interlaken for many years, and had also worked at Fairview Height Apartments at Cornell.  His love of bowling started at an early age, and continued with him all through his life. He was an avid Buffalo Bills and Yankee’s fan, and could be found cheering on Jeff Gordon through his fondness of NASCAR.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea J. Sowards in 1996; a brother, Leslie Sowards; and a sister, Beatrice O’Brien. Ed is survived by his children, Stanley (Barb) Sowards of Wichita Falls, Texas, Debbie (Jim) Sladish of Trumansburg, Laurie (Myron) Cronk of Trumansburg, Cindy (James) Hoke of Willard, grandchildren, Stacey (Chad) Croniser, Jennifer (Eric) Bonnett, Edward Sowards, and Ashley (Terry) Spiecher and a great grandson, Lucas Bonnett, a brother, Milton (Nita) Sowards of Interlaken, and sisters, Marie Johnson of Waterloo and Mary Lou Hill of Okeechobee, FL and a family friend, Glenda Mattoon.

The family will receive friends from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A funeral service will then immediately follow at the funeral home at 1:00pm.
