Arleen Enquist Gaustad SaltzmanArleen Enquist Gaustad Saltzman, age 83, passed away on Dec. 13, 2012, in Ithaca, N.Y., from the long-term effects of Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in North Minneapolis, Minn., on Nov. 22, 1929, Arleen was the daughter of Ernest E. and Anna (Lidstrom) Enquist. After graduating from the Patrick Henry High School in Minneapolis and earning a bachelor’s degree in art education from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Arleen began a colorful career as an art teacher in Wyalusing, Pa. She later moved to Bemidji, Minn., on Big Turtle Lake, a family-loved area, and then to Manchester, Vt. She and her husband, Stephen “Salty” Saltzman, also spent many winters in Argentina as fly fishing guides.

Full of life, Arleen had many hobbies including: painting, fly fishing, music (especially piano), golf, speed skating in her youth, volunteering at nursing homes, and assisting young artists throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, Arleen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stephen “Salty” Saltzman; brothers, Erling and Melvin Enquist; and step-daughter, Suzie Saltzman.  She is survived by her children, Richard and Wendy Gaustad; Tanna and Michael Fries; Carla and Kevin Sives; Joyleen “Joy” Gaustad and Janice “JJ” Johnson; and step-children, Dr. Stephen “Buzz” and Cheri Saltzman; Sallie and Bob Seymour; and Sean and Maria Saltzman; 11 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren and many friends.
