Mary H. Cushing, formerly of Trumansburg, passed away at Seneca Nursing Center in Waterloo, NY on Friday, September 28, 2012 at the age of 102.
Born on February 26, 1910, Mary was the daughter of the late Michael and Margaret (DeCoursey) Crowley. She grew up in Bristol and Starksboro, Vermont and graduated from Bristol High School in 1928. Mary continued her education at Trinity College in Burlington where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in 1932. Mary and her first husband, Philip A. Hayes operated a dairy farm in East Charlotte, Vermont for many years. Following the death of Philip, Mary went back to school and obtained her LPN from Fanny Allen Hospital in 1958. A year later, she moved to Trumansburg and in 1962 Mary married Paul Cushing. She worked at the Tompkins County Hospital and for the last nine years prior to her retirement, Mary was the office nurse for Drs. Gene and Linda Farley in Trumansburg.
Mary was an active member of the St. James the Apostle Catholic Church. For many years she would gather with fellow ladies of the church to quilt. Most of all, Mary loved her family unconditionally and was a very devoted aunt.
Mary is survived by two nieces, Margaret Driscoll of Essex Junction, VT and Marion Cordova of Hudson Falls; four nephews, Dr. Gerald (Judy) Hayes of Earlville, Martin (Joan) Hayes of Geneva, Robert (Jean) Hayes of Boynton Beach, FL, and Michael (Pat) Hayes of Sebastopol, CA; a special grand niece, Kathie Sullivan of Colchester, VT; and many other grand nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, and Philip, Mary was preceded in death by her second husband, Paul Cushing, and many other nieces and nephews
The family will be present to receive friends from 10:30 to 11:00am on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church in Trumansburg with Father John Tokaz, OFM Cap. officiating. Prayers of committal will immediately follow in St. James Cemetery.
