James "Jim" Teeter of Enfield, New York, passed away April 16, 2008 at age 88 in the Troy Community Hospital after a brief illness.
Jim was born September 3, 1919 in Ithaca, New York to Arthur and Lena Brown Teeter. He grew up and spent his life on the family farm, working with his father and then, in recent years, with his son.
A graduate of Ithaca High School in 1936, he was active in 4-H, Farm Bureau, the Dairyman's League, and the Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a member of the Kennedy's Corners Methodist Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years, subsequently attending the First Baptist Church of Trumansburg. For several years he also drove a bus for the Ithaca City School District.
A kind and gentle man, Jim spoke in a roundabout way, with a story to share, some humor and a twinkle in his eye. His life centered on his family and the family farm. He remained active on the farm until very recently, enjoying working in the woods, raising cattle, tinkering with the long-lasting farm machinery and working the fields. Extending beyond family to community, Jim had a strong commitment to blood donation, making his own contributions as long as he was age-eligible. Jim also loved to square dance, and was a member of the Square-A-Naders in his younger years.
Predeceased by his wife, M. Lucille Wagemaker Teeter, in 1964, plus both an infant son and daughter, Jim was a devoted, patient and loving father to his children Alice (John) Linton, Alan (Debbie Lloyd) Teeter and Joyce (Bill Andrew) VandeBogart. He is survived by them and grandchildren Brandon, Heather and Amy Linton, Alexander and Abigail Teeter and Samantha VandeBogart; his sister Catherine Teeter Kellogg; a sister-in-law Grace Wagemaker Kent; his companion of many years, Frances Andrew; and nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Trumansburg, 4443 East Seneca Road. Burial will be private at East Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Trumansburg, P.O. Box 686, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
