Adelaide O. Rice, age 101, resident of Rice Road for almost eighty years, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2012 following a brief hospitalization.
Born August 27, 1911 in New Haven, Connecticut, she was the only child of the late Frederick and Julia (Lambert) Osgood. Adelaide was a 1932 graduate of Emerson College in Boston, and attended a summer program at Oxford University following her graduation. While working as the director of a traveling theater production company, her travels to the Trumansburg area led to an introduction to James E. Rice Jr. Following a three month courtship, they were married in 1933 and spent many years traveling the globe. Adelaide had an extensive and rewarding career late into her seventies. She worked as a copy writer, account executive in advertising, manager for political campaigns and as an administrative assistant for Tompkins County Medical Society. On her first trip to Paris with her husband, she rekindled her love for painting and continued this passion through her last days.
She is survived by her son, James E. “Jerry” Rice III (Linda Sugnet), her grand daughters, Ara Karlberg of Williamsport, PA, Tracey Jimenez (Michael) and Jennifer Heise (Patrick) all of Trumansburg; her great grand children, Morgan Williams, Julia Jimenez and Riley Heise, and a great great grand daughter, Ella Peterson. Adelaide was preceded in death by her husband, Judge James E. Rice Jr. in 1998.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg with prayers of committal offered by Fr. Gurdon Brewster of the Church of the Epiphany. The family will receive friends at Adelaide’s home on Rice Road in Trumansburg following the service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider a donation in Adelaide’s memory to the SPCA of Tompkins County, 1640 Hanshaw Road, Ithaca, NY 14850 or the Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts, PO Box 1053, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
