Ana L. Kastenhuber, age 88, of 385 Enfield Center Road East, died on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at Cayuga Medical Center, following a brief hospitalization.
Ana was born in Ithaca on October 10, 1927 to the late George Dewey Handlen and Calma Tuckerman Handlen, and grew up in the Covert and Trumansburg area, and attended Trumansburg High School. Ana, most commonly known as Gram or Grammie, had worked in food service all of her adult life; many years were spent at Kresge’s in downtown Ithaca. Ana also cleaned homes for many local families. She had been an active member of T’burg Seniors, the Enfield Grange and Seniors, and for more than 20 years volunteered for the Food Pantry in Enfield. Many happy times were spent at the Eagle’s Club in Ithaca, where she had been an auxiliary member for several years. She will be notably remembered for her baking, most of all her pies. She had a real zest for life from the love of music to her flower beds to the bird feeders in her yard.
Ana is survived by her children; Cheryl (Marty) Oltz of Ithaca, Debbie (Dave) Maycumber of Newfield, Roger Kastenhuber Jr. of Newfield, George and Tina Kastenhuber, both of Ithaca, 11 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and a sister, Betty Handlen of Groton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, John “Butch” Sincebaugh; a daughter, Jacqueline Maycumber; her siblings, Marian Shippos and Jack Handlen.
The family will receive friends at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street in Trumansburg, from 10:00am to Noon on Saturday, April 30, 2016. The family will then host a reception at the Fraternal Order of Eagles #1253, 161 Cecil Malone Drive in Ithaca, beginning at 1:00pm.
