ANGELO MARGARIS

ITHACA - Angelo Margaris of 130 Muriel St., Ithaca, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Sunday, November 19, 2006, at the age of 84.

Born on December 3, 1921 in Worcester, Massachusetts, Angelo was the son of George Margaris and Vlassia Chrisanthopoulos Margaris. Following a 1939 graduation from Stuyvesant High School in New York City he entered Cornell University. Angelo earned a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Cornell in 1943. From 1943 to 1946 he served in the US Army Signal Corps, much of that time within the India-Burma Theatre of Operations. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Tech 4th Grade.

He completed a Masters in Mathematics at Syracuse University in 1951 and accepted a position with Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio as a Mathematics Instructor. While teaching at Oberlin College, Angelo also earned a PhD in Mathematics from Cornell University, in1956. Angelo taught mathematics at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio from 1957 to 1968, and later at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1983 he retired and the family moved to Ithaca.

Throughout his lifetime Angelo received numerous honors and awards both as a student and as a teacher. He wrote a well-regarded college textbook entitled "First Order Mathematical Logic." Angelo was an avid reader, and loved electronics, animals, the NY Yankees and jazz.

Angelo is survived by his ex-wife and friend, Glenna W. Margaris of Ithaca; one daughter, Amy Margaris (Jason Haugen) of Oberlin, OH; one son, James Margaris of Cambridge, MA; three nephews, Lee Margaris of CA, Dean and Dennis Margaris of FL and one niece, Lynn Margaris of FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Danny.

Angelo's family will be present to receive friends on Saturday, November 25, 2006, from 2-5 p.m. at the home of Glenna Margaris, 199 Tareyton Drive in Ithaca.
