On Sunday, September 17, the world lost one of the finest teachers to have ever picked up a piece of chalk. Carol Ann Tatar was born August 19, 1950 at the Masonic Hospital in Chicago, IL to William and Alice Bunch who survive. She moved from Evanston, IL in 1967 to Wappingers Falls , NY and graduated from high school in 1968. She attended and graduated from Dutchess Community College in 1970. It was at Dutchess she met her husband, Paul Tatar, who also survives her. They were married June 6, 1970 and moved to Brockport to complete their education. Carol had decided to be a teacher while attending 3rd grade in Evanston. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brockport and moved to Ithaca in 1973. She briefly worked for Cornell in data processing but soon found a job in the Trumansburg Schools. She completed her Masters Degree at Cortland State while doing the job she loved, teaching. Carol was passionate about her career and epitomized the profession. For 33 years Carol took her 3rd graders and created fine students and good citizens for the future. To say she loved teaching does not fully explain her feelings and to say she did it well falls far short of the reality. As her final act of goodness, Carol's organs were donated so that somewhere there are those who will benefit from this precious life.
Besides her loving parents and husband, Carol leaves behind her in-laws, Louise and Otto Tatar; her nieces, Elizabeth, Abigail, and Sarah Meyer; her great-niece, Gabrielle Brundage; the Charles Srnka family; her "family" at the Trumansburg Elementary School; and many loving friends and neighbors.
The family will be present to receive friends on Thursday, September 21st, from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 6:00 to 8:00pm at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg.
A celebration of Carol's life will be held at the Trumansburg High School auditorium on Saturday, September 23rd at 2:00pm. A reception will follow at the home of Ted and Karen Murray, 3082 Jacksonville Rd., Trumansburg.
A memorial fund will be established in Carol's loving memory. Contributions may be directed to The Carol Tatar Memorial Fund, c/o CFCU, 1030 Craft Rd., Ithaca, NY 14850.
