Arthur J. Covert II, of Ithaca, passed away surrounded by family at his home on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the age of 74.
Art was born in Lodi on March 14, 1939, a son of the late James and Dorothy (Baker) Covert. He worked at several different places over the years including dairy farming at his family homestead, Babcock’s, the County Home, Hammond’s, Wheaton’s, and both Watkins Glen and Taughannock State Parks.
Art always looked forward to annual fishing trips to Canada with the Babcock crew and hunting at his family homestead. He truly was a fireman at heart. Art was a longtime member of the Enfield Volunteer Fire Department and on several occasions rushed into homes without any equipment to save people and animals from fires.
Art is survived by his wife, Hester Covert of Ithaca; five children, Molly Covert (Jim Matthys) of Interlaken, Polly Covert Ferreira of Lodi, Holly Covert (Roy Johnson) of Newfield, Arthur James Covert III of Ovid, and Kenneth (Tasha) Covert of Lodi; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sister, Beverly Riley; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Simmons; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and his wife’s extended family. In addition to his parents, Art was preceded in death by a daughter, Amy Jane; son-in-law, Boofa Ferreira; and father-in-law, William Simmons.
There will be a Celebration of Art’s Life held from 2:00 to 6:00pm on Saturday, August 3, 2013 at the Enfield Volunteer Fire Department, 172 Enfield Main Road, Ithaca.
The family asks those who wish to make a contribution in Art’s memory to kindly consider the Enfield Volunteer Fire Department, 172 Enfield Main Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
