Bernard Weitz, age 82, of 35 Whig Street, Trumansburg (formerly 1 Bella Vista Dr., Ithaca and Sarasota, Florida) passed away in the comfort of his home and warm embrace of family, on Tuesday, May 17, 2005.

Born on April 5, 1923 in New York City, Bernard was the son of David and Rose Kasten Weitz. He faithfully served his country during WW II, receiving an Honorable Discharge from the US Army on May 11, 1946. Upon earning a Master's in Education, Bernard accepted a teaching position at the Uniondale High School in Uniondale, NY. Following his retirement from Uniondale High School, he moved to Point Pleasant, NJ and after a few years became a resident of Sarasota, FL. He recently moved to the Ithaca area to be near his daughter and family.

Bernard was an avid fisherman who enjoyed angling in both the ocean and freshwater lakes. He was also a gifted poet and a very beloved father, grandfather and "teacher of life".

Bernard was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Goldstein Weitz in 1996. He is survived by a daughter Ellen W. (Graham) Foulkes of Trumansburg; one grandson, Sam Shapiro; one granddaughter, Sarah Shapiro; one sister, Clairre (Gilbert) Garbow of Brooklyn; 3 sisters-in-law, Diane (Raymond) Schwartz of Maryland, Jean Gillespie of San Francisco, CA and Rose Mandelkorn of Florida and 2 nephews, Bruce and Michael Garbow.

Services will be held at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St. Trumansburg on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 4:00 PM with the Rabbi Scott Glass officiating. Interment will be in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
