Beverley Ann Hancox

March 1, 1949 — September 23, 2023

Interlaken

Beverley “Buffy” Ann Hancox of Interlaken passed away at home surrounded by family, on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the age of 74.

Bev was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada on March 1, 1949, daughter of the late Ted and Marie (nee Rigg) Hancox. After completing her high school education at Weston Collegiate Institute, she began working in theater companies, namely Studio Lab Theatre in Toronto. Working with the theater company would take her across Canada, including a few shows at mining camps in Sudbury, Ontario. She even took her talents to Italy where she performed in children’s plays. When she came to the States to study theater in Auburn, NY, she found a passion in costume design and directing.

Bev’s fingerprints can be found in many local productions, ranging from our public schools to community theater. Her creativity in costume design is unmatched. Much of her vast collection of sewing fabric and notions was donated to other costumers and artists so that her legacy will live on.

Bev lived a long and fulfilling life with many adventures and much generosity of both her time and heart. In her younger days she was a member of the Auburn Saints Motorcycle Club, bringing her transit van out to parties to safely bring home her Club friends that overindulged. On more than one occasion, she and Glenn opened up their home in Interlaken to Peace Marchers as they came through the area, receiving gifts of origami cranes made by Buddhist Monks in the group. The cranes can still be found in their home today. As a stay at home mom in her children’s early years, she encouraged their creativity and curiosity, as well as that of their friends, with an amply stocked costume box full of wonders and fun.

Volunteering with South Seneca’s PTA opened a door for Bev. She moved on to work in both the Elementary and High school offices before eventually transferring to BOCES, where she retired from the school system. She could be found offering hugs to her children and their friends whenever they crossed paths in the halls.

Beverley is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, Glenn Bucien; their children, Theodora and James Bucien; sister, Lynn Wilkins; mother-in-law, Johanna Bucien; and siblings in law, Roger Bucien and Karen (Steve) Woodbine. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Conrad Bucien.

A celebration of Bev’s life will be announced at a later date.

The family asks those that would like to make a donation in Bev’s memory to kindly consider your local community theater or animal shelter. Bev’s favorites were the Encore Players Community Theater, Between the Lakes Community Service Players and the Beverley Animal Shelter.
