Bruce Caldwell, of 3664 Railroad Avenue, Interlaken, passed away unexpectedly at Cayuga Medical Center on Tuesday, February 21, 2006.
Born on January 21, 1946 in Syracuse, New York, Bruce was the son of Roland and Ruth Wolverton Caldwell. The Caldwell family moved from Syracuse to Ithaca when Bruce was an infant.
Bruce was passionate about his family and nature. An attentive listener, he knew his family well and was a source of comfort to them as well as a source of joy and laughter. Bruce had a great sense of humor and loved hearing a good joke as much as he did telling one. He was an avid reader and greatly enjoyed the times he spent reading with his wife, Bonnie, at his side. Bruce's passion for nature was captured through the lens of his camera in photographs of flowers and birds. He especially enjoyed watching hummingbirds at his feeder.
Following his graduation from the Ithaca High School, Bruce remained in the area, accepting a position with the Cayuga Medical Center in 1982. Throughout his 24 years at the hospital, Bruce became an icon as he proudly walked the halls in his easily recognizable security guard uniform. He was well respected by staff and administration alike. Bruce's strong work ethic earned the admiration of his co-workers and they strived to emulate him. Work, for Bruce, was a "home away from home", where co-workers, especially fellow security guards, were truly considered family.
Bruce is survived by his wife and soul-mate, Bonnie Hymes Caldwell of Interlaken; one cherished daughter, Lyndsay Caldwell of Ithaca; two step-sons, Derek (Kate) Tripp of Ithaca and Jason (Michele) Tripp of Burdett; two step-grandchildren, Isaac and Haley Tripp and one sister, Alice Davis of Florida.
In accordance with Bruce's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A reception for Bruce's family and friends will be held at the Bonnie Howell Center A&B, at Cayuga Medical Center, on Sunday, February 26, 2006 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm.
The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg. 1-888-534-5446.
