Arlene C. Smith of 6292 Iradell Rd., Trumansburg, passed away at the Hospicare Comfort Care Unit in Ithaca on Tuesday, February 21, 2006, at the age of 74.
Born on October 28, 1931 in Montour Falls, NY, Arlene was the daughter of Raymond and Gladys Russell Carpenter.
Arlene was employed by Cornell University for 28 years before her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Trumansburg and devoted countless hours of volunteer service through the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and as a member of CRVIS (Cornell Retirees Volunteering in Schools). Through CRVIS, Arlene enjoyed one on one reading with children in the Enfield Elementary School. She was also a member of the Cornell Retirees Assn. In her free time, Arlene could often be found sewing or doing embroidery.
Arlene is survived by her husband, of 50 years, Carlton of Trumansburg; one daughter, Deborah (Erik) Whitney of Ithaca ; one son, Minor (Heidi) Smith of Newport, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Rachel, Grace, Luke, Robert, Gabrielle and Erika; two brothers, Bob Carpenter of Trumansburg and Gerald Carpenter of Slaterville and many nieces and nephews.
The family will be present to receive their friends at the First Baptist Church, 4443 E. Seneca Rd., Trumansburg on Friday, February 24, 2006 from 6-8 pm.
Services will be held, at the church, on Saturday, February 25, 2006 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Pete Hood officiating.
