Melvin C. Smith of Montour Falls, (formerly of Trumansburg), passed away at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls on Friday, August 5, 2003 at the age of 89.
Born on July 25, 1914 in Burdett, Mel was the son of Clarence and Orpha Carrigan Smith. Following graduation from Cook Academy in Montour Falls in 1935 he accepted a position with Shepard-Niles Manufacturing in Montour Falls. He had also worked at Montgomery Wards in Ithaca and Cornell University from where he retired.
Mel was a dedicated volunteer fireman throughout his life. He was involved with the Montour Falls, Mecklenburg and Trumansburg Fire Departments. He was also a former member of the Trumansburg Fish and Game Club and never passed up an opportunity to go hunting or cast his line into a lake or stream. His family will always remember the camping excursions filled with laughter and discovery. They will also cherish the hand-made gifts crafted out of wood by Mel.
Mel was preceded in death by a daughter Lorraine and a sister Juanita Duncan. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Phyllis Ewald Smith of Montour Falls; 2 sons, Ronald Smith of Parkersburg, West Virginia and Richard (Julie) Smith of Oswego; 5 grandchildren, Lorie, Brett, Stacie, Holly and Ronald, Jr. and 3 great-grandchildren.
