C. Damon Osterhout

C. Damon Osterhout of Trumansburg went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 27, 2016 at the age of 74.

Damon was born in Warsaw, New York on March 1, 1942, a son of the late Frank Clinton and Hazel (Messer) Osterhout. Damon was an Engineering Associate for Corning Incorporated in the Manufacturing, Technology, & Engineering Division. The Engineering Associate position recognizes significant, measurable and outstanding engineering contributions to Corning Inc. involving exemplary technical depth, breadth and leadership. Damon started his 45 year career with Corning Incorporated on July 1, 1969 and retired on December 31, 2014. He is a graduate of the school of Electrical Engineering, Indiana Institute of Technology, class on 1966.

Damon contributed many firsts in the areas of process and machine controls and automation in manufacturing as an engineer and supervisor of teams. He installed the first production application of automated robotic technology for Corning Incorporated in 1970 for the Cathode Ray Tube business. Robotics is widely used in Corning’s worldwide operations today to improve working conditions and efficiency.

Damon also pioneered Corning Incorporated’s application of Induction Heating technology to aid in sintering ultra-pure glass, metals, and nitrides. Damon was recognized by Corning Incorporated as a true champion of inclusion and diversity and lived those values at work and in his private life.

Damon coached and mentored many of the younger people in the organization. He was the holder of three granted patents, 15 US patent applications, 41 international patent applications, and published & presented numerous technical papers. He was acknowledged as a rare individual whose skill as an engineer was tempered by his ability to perform fundamental research. He had an innate curiosity, loved to learn, ask questions, and then would go to the laboratory and find out why. He openly shared his dedication to his faith, his beliefs, and his strong family values with his co-workers. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather.

Damon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Florence; two daughters, Amanda (Christopher Greig) Osterhout and Aimee (Vincent) Osterhout Nolasco; and a granddaughter, Isabella Nolasco.

A Memorial Service will be announced in the Spring.
