Calvin H. Rothermich

d. September 1, 2016

Calvin H. Rothermich passed peacefully at home on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at the age of 89.

Calvin was born in Ithaca on March 8, 1927, son of the Leon C. and Lila (Nelson) Rothermich. In March of 1948, Calvin married Doris K. Lehmann, the lady with a million dollar smile. They added to their family in 1952 with the birth of a daughter, Ann. At the age of 16, Calvin took over the family farm and began a life-long career as a farmer, combining this year’s oat crop just last week. In addition to farming Calvin was a logger, ran a sawmill, and operated a wood shop. He started farming with horses and transitioned to tractors and self-propelled combines but never lost his fondness for driving horses. Often he commented he worked harder with tractors than with horses for the horses needed rest. Friends would sometimes ask, “why don’t you retire and do something fun,” his reply was “I have and I do.” He loved family, friends, and farming, in that order. He was an avid hunter, reader, and he loved to tell stories of his earlier years.

Calvin is survived by his wife of 68 years, Doris and daughter Ann (Bob) Chaffee.

The family will be present to receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00pm on Wednesday, September 7, 2016 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 3:00pm at the funeral home.

To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to sow and a time to harvest. A time to weep and time to laugh. A time to mourn and a time to dance. A time to be born and a time to die. He hath made everything beautiful in its time. Ecclesiastes 3.
