Carl Albert Ganoung of 3667 County Road 139, Ovid, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at the age of 78.
Born in Ovid, New York on August 10, 1931, Carl was the son of the late Carl and Elizabeth (Bond) Ganoung. He joined the US Navy on December 28, 1951 serving in the Korean War on a Landing Ship Tank before being honorably discharged on December 16, 1955. In following years, Carl worked for the Town of Ovid as a member of the road crew and as a patient aide at Willard Psychiatric Center.
Carl had a great passion for the outdoors. He and his wife, Ruth enjoyed spending time canoeing, cross country skiing, and camping in the Adirondacks. Carl looked forward to deer hunting in the fall and fishing in the spring. He was a talented woodworker, creating many handmade gifts for his family and friends that will be forever cherished. The most memorable times in Carl's life were those spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He was a life long member of the Interlaken Reformed Church and past member of the Interlaken American Legion Post #462. Carl volunteered a countless number of hours at Camp Fowler enjoying both the projects worked on and the friendships made.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 47 years, Ruth in 2002 and a brother, George Ganoung. He is survived by a son, Steven Wayne (Carol) Ganoung of North Syracuse; two daughters, Cynthia Lynn (Mark) Stilwell of Trumansburg and Mary Ann (Thomas) Williams of Ovid; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two brothers, Harold and Roger Ganoung; as well as several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews.
The family will be present to receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00pm on Sunday, October 18th at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00am on Monday, October 19th at the Interlaken Reformed Church with the Reverend Derek Vande Slunt officiating. Prayers of committal will follow at Lake View Cemetery.
