Carl Richard Smith, beloved father, known to many as “Doc Smith” passed away peacefully in Delray Beach, Florida at the age of 93.
Carl was born October 1, 1919 to Herman L. and Margaret E. Smith, the youngest of three children. He was raised in Trumansburg, New York, graduated from Trumansburg High School, Notre Dame University, and the University of Pennsylvania where he completed his degree in dentistry, following his father’s career path.
Carl served in the US Army Medical Corps during World War II where he met his wife Virginia “Ginny” while they were stationed in France. They married in San Mateo, California and soon after established their home in Trumansburg. Carl and Virginia celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary together in 2007. Virginia died in October that year.
Carl established his dental practice in Trumansburg and raised five children with Virginia before his full retirement in 1982, when they moved to Delray Beach. Carl has many close friends in Trumansburg, and enjoyed entertaining, watching and participating in sports such as golf and tennis, was an active Rotarian, and member of St. James Catholic Church.
A cottage on Cayuga Lake provided summers of sun, swimming, and wonderful gatherings with friends and family. For the past 30 years, Delray Beach has been home. Doc enjoyed close friendships and lots of entertaining at their condo in Miramar Gardens. Carl is remembered for his love and loyalty to his roots, his family, and his friendships new and old.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Smith. He is survived by all five of his children, Eric (Maria) Smith of Ligonier, PA, Dana (Roxanne) Smith of Trumansburg, Paul (Robin) Smith of Bend, OR, Mike (LaJuana) Smith of Los Angeles, CA, and Beth Smith (Mike Lambert) of Eugene, OR; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one step-great grandchild; and many special friends including the Goodell family of Trumansburg.
There will be no calling hours or service at this time. Interment will occur in the summer of 2013.
