Carol A. (Nee Metcalf) Winters

April 3, 1929 — August 12, 2023

Ithaca

Carol Audrey Metcalf Winters of Ithaca, New York went home to be with her Lord on August 12, 2023, at the age of 94.

Carol was born on April 3, 1929, in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, daughter of the late Minnie Holmes and Earl Ruggles Metcalf. Carol graduated from Garrison Memorial High School of Shickshinny, Pennsylvania. She completed her nursing degree in 1950 at Wilkes-Barre (PA) General Hospital School of Nursing and became a licensed Registered Nurse in 1952. She took a nursing position at Presbyterian Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, where she met her future husband, Leroy Allen Winters—a patient she cared for during her employment there. She and Lee married in 1954 and later moved to the Ithaca area where Lee started a landscaping business. In 1963, they purchased a home in Mecklenburg, New York, where they raised their 5 children and then lived until Lee passed away in 2013. They spent many enjoyable summers at Carol’s favorite place—their Seneca lakeshore cottage near Lodi Point, New York. Carol was an active member of several area churches through the years, including Calvary Baptist in Trumansburg, Bethel Grove Bible Church in Ithaca, First Baptist in Interlaken, Trumansburg United Methodist, Mecklenburg United Methodist, and most recently the Salvation Army Church of Ithaca.

Whether as a mother and grandmother, nurse, Backyard Bible Club instructor, Bible teacher, church choir member, hostess, prayer warrior, mentor, or friend, she lived much of her adult life in loving service to others for the glory of her Savior Jesus Christ. Although Carol will be greatly missed by those who know and love her, we celebrate her life and legacy, and rejoice that she has gone on to her Heavenly reward.

Carol is survived by her five children, Natalie (Raymie) Porter, David (Dolores) Winters, Diane (Joe Gibson) Winters, Holly (Christopher Standish) Winters, and Scott (Beth) Winters, as well as four grandchildren, Isaiah and Joshua Porter, Margot Standish, and David Scott Winters. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by Leroy Winters—her husband of 59 years, a brother Lloyd Metcalf, and a sister Janet Metcalf Givens.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, August 19 from 2:00-3:00pm at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 3:00pm. Burial will be private for family. The family asks those that wish to make a donation in Carol’s memory to kindly consider Ithaca Salvation Army, 150 N. Albany Street, Ithaca NY, 14850.
