David R. Powell, age 75, of 8486 Powell Road, passed away on Tuesday, November 6, at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester.
Calling hours will be held from 2:00 to 4:00pm and 7:00 to 9:00on Friday, November 9, at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 10, at the Ovid Federated Church, followed by prayers of committal at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Francis Solanus Catholic Church, PO Box 337, Ovid, NY 14521 or the Ecumenical Food Pantry, PO Box 340, Ovid, NY 14521.
David was born on October 23, 1932 in Trumansburg, a son of the late Edward R. and Helene (Dill) Powell, and moved to the Powell Road at the age of 3. He and his wife operated Maple Leaf Farm for many years, which also included farm equipment and tire sales in the later years. In his many years of operating the dairy farm, David served on various boards to include the Farm Credit Service, Eastern Milk Producers Co-op, Agway, and the Farm Bureau. His hobbies included the John Deere Two Cylinder Club, camping in Florida for the winter months, and volunteering at the Interlaken Historical Society.
David was a devoted and loving family man, he was loved for his sense of humor and wit, and he was an engaging person who was loved by everyone who had the priviledge of meeting him. He lived his entire life in a rural, agricultural community yet was a very worldly person.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jean Huhn Powell, his children, Sue (J.R.) Westervelt of Interlaken, Barbara (Darwin) Smith of Ovid, Mark Powell of Hershey, PA, Nancy (Ron) Piwowarczyk of West Seneca, NY and Julie (David) Thompson of Seneca Falls; grandchildren, Jennifer Porter and Stacey Westervelt, Brian, James, Kristen and Greg Smith, Brad and Chloe Powell, Stephanie and Kimberly Ellison, Lexi and Kelly Thompson, a great granddaughter, Sydney Smith, a brother, Gordon E. (Peggy) Powell of Interlaken, a brother in law, Jack (Sandy) Huhn of Sheldrake and several nieces and nephews.
