Douglas J. Austic

d. April 8, 2014

Douglas J. Austic, lifelong resident of Trumansburg, passed away unexpectedly of heart failure at Rochester General on April 8, 2014 at the age of 68.

Born in Ithaca on April 2, 1946, Doug was the son of the late Albert and Helen (Payne) Austic. After graduating from Trumansburg High School in 1964, Doug attended Cornell University receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Poultry Science. Doug began his career at Babcock Farms and eventually began farming and operating a feed business on his own farm. Over the years he worked with his brother Herb on numerous construction and remodeling projects. Doug became involved with the Town of Ulysses serving as a code enforcement officer and was elected as the Town Supervisor, a position he held for 16 years. While working at these various jobs throughout the years, Doug found time to operate his own business, Doug Austic Woodworking.

Spending time in his beloved workshop making cabinets and carving folk art was a passion of Doug’s. Family and friends will forever cherish the one of a kind pieces he created. Doug enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting, caring for his lawn, vegetable gardening, and driving around with his dog, Molly. He could always find an excuse to buy a new tool or machine, especially if it needed work. He started many of his days with coffee at Falls Restaurant and often ended up at Millspaugh’s to visit with friends.

Doug is survived by his wife, Paula Austic; three daughters, Deb (Ron Loz) Austic, Amy Austic Sens, and Beth (Jake) Kennedy; six grandchildren, Thane and Emily Austic-Loz, Emma and Braeden Sens, and Tristan and Maya Kennedy; four brothers, Dick (Pat), Bill (Jan), Bruce (Kim), and Herb (Sharon) Austic; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family will be present to receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, April 12 at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church, 80 East Main Church, Trumansburg. A reception will immediately follow at the church.

The family asks those who wish to make a contribution in Doug’s memory to kindly consider the Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Co., EMS, PO Box 418, Trumansburg, NY 14886 or the Trumansburg Charitable Trust, c/o Lawrence Reverby, PO Box 368, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
