Eleanor R. Hamill

Eleanor Robertson Hamill passed away peacefully on July 2, 2016, with her two loving daughters by her side.

Eleanor was born on August 28, 1917 in Red Creek, NY, the daughter of John B. Robertson and Ruth Abigail Ashley. Eleanor grew up in nearby Wolcott, NY, and graduated from Leavenworth Central School in 1935. Following her high school graduation, she attended the University of Rochester where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. In 1939 she moved to Trumansburg, NY, and began her teaching career at the Trumansburg Central School. Shortly thereafter she met her late husband, Edward J. Hamill, when he joined the faculty as the instrumental music teacher and band director of the local school. In 1943 Eleanor and Edward were happily married, and their marriage lasted 31 years until Edward’s death in 1974. The loving couple were the proud parents of two daughters – Jean Hamill of Trumansburg, NY, and Lois Holdt of Cheshire, CT.

In addition to Eleanor’s parents and husband, Eleanor was predeceased by her older brother, George W. Robertson (Virginia), and her beloved granddaughter, Elizabeth Ashley Holdt. She was also the devoted grandmother of Douglas R. Holdt and granddaughter-in-law Jennifer L. Engels as well as her two darling great grandchildren Hannah and Sammy Holdt, all residents of Honolulu, HI. Several nephews and nieces also survive her.

Eleanor lived a full and rewarding life that was truly enriched by family and friends. Following several years of declining health, she has finally completed her earthly journey. Although she will be deeply missed, she will never be far away due to the depth and breadth of fond memories that will forever live in the hearts and minds of those who dearly loved her.
