Elery E. Rumsey of Newfield passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the age of 50.

Elery was born in Rochester on December 28, 1965. He graduated from Ithaca High School and was employed at Cornell University and Welliver McGuire. Elery took great pride in helping others and was a very dedicated long time member of the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Department, along with Enfield Volunteer Fire Department, helping with everything from emergency calls to pancake breakfasts and chicken BBQ’s. With his outgoing personality, Elery enjoyed being around people whether he was hanging out with friends and family at the garage, helping his brothers and sisters, or attending any local town functions including the Watkins Glen NASCAR races, Newfield Home Days, Italian Fest, and fairs and carnivals. Elery loved fishing, deer hunting, eating chicken wings, rooting on the Oakland Raiders, but was happiest the day he married his wife, Jennifer. He was known to give friends and family nicknames, some including his famous ones being “What’s up Goat Roper, “ “Chicken Wing Monster,” “Weasel Bob,” and “Millionaire.”

Elery is survived by his wife, Jennifer Rumsey and son, Wil Sorsen; fathers, Jack Rumsey and Harold Phoenix; six sisters, Debbie Rumsey (Krystal and Josh), Tina Rumsey (Britney), Jill (Joe) Tilton (Sabrina and Chelsey), Jamie Witkowski, Jaclyn Temple, and Maria Norman (Annabelle); three brothers, Jack Rumsey, Randy Rumsey (Dwight), and Jacob Rumsey; mother in law, Barbara Ferrell; brother in law, Gary (Jackie) Eggleston; two sisters in law, Susan Ferrell (Deborah Meeker) and Kimberley Burling (Michael); and many aunts, uncles, cousin, and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by parents, Mattie Phoenix and Al Shade; sister, Debbie Rumsey; father in law, Charles Ferrell; and two brothers in law, Andrew Witkowski and Michael Ferrell.

The family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 to 8:00pm on Wednesday, February, 10, 2016 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. Funeral Services will be private for family and close friends.
