Ellen Kay Mitterer

Ellen Kay Mitterer of Trumansburg passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 5, 2025 at the age of 85. 

Ellen was born in Wellsboro, PA on May 23, 1939, a daughter of Leonard and Laura (Crane) Irwin. She married her high school sweetheart, Marvin A. Mitterer in August 1957.

Ellen and Marv shared a profound love for teaching at the Trumansburg School District. Ellen taught 2nd grade for 31 years and found great joy in her positive impact at such a foundational age in a child’s development. She was especially proud of her “legacy” students, teaching children of children over the years.

In addition to her commitment to the Trumansburg schools, Ellen was an active member of the Trumansburg United Methodist Church and the Ulysses Historical Society.

Ellen showed unconditional love for her family and was known as the “family historian”, always keeping family connected and making each member feel special.

She is survived by two sons, Lee and Kent; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Adam, and Abigail; two sisters, Wilma Trias and Roberta Butler. In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin A. Mitterer; and her sister Dorothy Mitstifer. 

 The family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00pm on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, January 10, 2025 at Trumansburg United Methodist Church, 80 East Main Street, Trumansburg. Ellen’s remains will be buried at All Saints Episcopal Church in Brookland, PA on May 24, 2025, where she will join her life’s love and companion, Marvin A. Mitterer.
