Ernest W. England of 16 Pease Street, Trumansburg, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the age of 87.
Born in Oswego, New York on February 20, 1921, Ernie was the son of the late Ernest and Joan (Donaldson) England. He was a graduate of Oswego High School in 1939. On October 7, 1942, he entered the United States Army. Earning the rank of Corporal, Ernie received an honorable discharge on December 10, 1945. Following his military service, Ernie accepted a position at the H.L. Green Store, where he worked for several years before he became the manager of the Judd Falls Road P&C in Ithaca. He retired from P&C in 1984.
Ernie was an avid golfer and will be remembered for wearing his red socks both on and off the golf course. He volunteered countless hours at the Ulysses Philomathic Library and was a very active member in the Church of the Epiphany where he served as warden and head usher. Ernie loved his family and cherished every moment he spent with them.
Ernie is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Miriam Cogswell England. He is also survived by two daughters, Sue (Mark) Lason of Trumansburg and Carol (Joseph Jr) Muraca of Independence, Kentucky; one son, James England of Ithaca; four grandchildren, Joseph III (Julie), Matthew (Bethany), Andrew (Rachel), and Anthony Muraca; three step-grandchildren, Christopher (Pamela) and Scott (Heather) Lason, and Mindy Lason Colon; two great-grandchildren, Jason and Addison and two step-great-grandchildren, Aeriella and Marianna.
The family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Church of the Epiphany, 23 Elm St., Trumansburg with the Rev. Gurdon Brewster officiating. In recognition of Ernie's faithful service to his country, members of the US Honor Guard and the Arthur E. Bouton American Legion Post #770 will perform a Military Honors Tribute at the church immediately following the memorial service. Private interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Orwell, New York.
