Eugene G. Burpee

Eugene G. Burpee, age 76, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2022, at Cayuga Medical Center.

Born in Binghamton, NY on November 16, 1945 and grew up in Greene, N.Y. He was the son of the late Stanley and Grace (Gardner) Burpee. Gene graduated from Greene Central High School in 1963 and received his Associates Degree from Broome Community College in 1965. He graduated from Florida State University in 1967, obtaining his Bachelors degree. Gene served in the United States Army in 1967 during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1969.

Gene received his Masters in Social Work from Syracuse University in 1974 and began a long career in social work. He worked for the NYS Department of Developmental Disabilities from 1975-1983 before taking a position with the NYS Department of Labor as an Employment Counselor. He formally retired in 2001 but continued to work part time with Cornell University as a Career Counselor until 2009.

Gene served on the Village of Trumansburg Board, was member of the Trumansburg American Legion Post 770 and served on the Geneganslet Lake Association Board. He volunteered his time additionally with the Boy Scouts, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. He was also a lifetime member of the Trumansburg Rifle and Pistol Club, where he was a certified hunter safety educator and certified NRA pistol instructor.

He loved spending time outdoors, particularly hunting, pistol shooting, hiking, sailing, and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Ann Burpee; their children; Karen (David) Ellis, Stephen Burpee, Kevin Burpee, and Brian Burpee; siblings, David ( Pat ) Burpee and Carole Metty; brother in law, John Boyle Jr., and many nieces, nephews and great nephews.  Gene was pre-deceased by his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00pm on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Trumansburg American Legion, 4431 E. Seneca Road, Trumansburg.
