A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held at the Reynoldsville United Methodist Church on Saturday, August 24, 2002 at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Eleanor Haber officiating.
Born on November 17, 1911 in Reynoldsville, New York, Gladys was the daughter of Oscar and Margaret Strong Soule.
Teaching was a labor of love for Gladys. From her beginnings as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in the Hector/Lodi area until her retirement many years later from the Watkins Glen Central School District, Gladys taught with passion. The mutual respect that developed between Gladys and her students often paved the way for life-long friendships.
Gladys also became friends with many people through her active membership in the Reynoldsville United Methodist Church. She wore many hats as part of the church family and was always first in line to help with a project or activity.
A strong devotion to her family was the primary source of joy and happiness in Gladys's life. She was involved in all aspects of family member's lives and was an unending source of strength, love and compassion. For those who knew and loved Gladys, a special place will be forever reserved in their hearts for her warm smile and gentleness.
Gladys was preceded in death by her first husband Earl Shannon. She is survived by her husband Robert Cartmell of Northern Cambria, PA; one daughter M. Virginia Turley of Rochester, one son Charles Shannon of Jeffersonville, IN; one brother Robert Soule of Alpine; three grandchildren, Mary, Roger and Lauriel; six great-grandchildren, Nathan, Elizabeth, Mecholah, Trey, Solomon and Yaki and many nieces and nephews.
