Gladys I. Durling

d. February 25, 2013

Gladys Irene (Terry) Durling, a resident of Beechtree Care Center, formerly of Trumansburg, went home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, February 25, 2013 at the age of 91.

Born in Springfield, Vermont on June 4, 1921, Gladys was the daughter of William and Florence (Maynard) Terry. In 1946, shortly after graduating from Ithaca High School, she married Clyde Durling of Trumansburg. Gladys devoted her entire life to her family, who owned and operated the Durling Farm. In the community, Gladys served as a 4-H Leader, a Girl Scout Leader, and enjoyed her association with the Podunk Ladies Group. Her yard seemed to be blooming all season with flowers, shrubs and trees, and her vegetable garden provided for the family throughout the year. Even while her home was pleasantly buzzing with activity, Gladys found time to do needlework, listen to music, and collect post cards and salt and pepper shakers.

In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde in 1999; five brothers, William, George, Raymond, Kenneth and Donald and one sister, Dorothy Ockay.

Gladys is survived by her children, Donna (Mickey) Miller of Georgia, Richard (Laura) Durling, Ron (Marcia) Durling and Wayne (Jacqui) Durling, all of Trumansburg; grandchildren, Sean (Susan) McCarthy, Tara (Shannon) Bell, Ashley (Jason) Austin, Ronda (Bob) Landon, Kirby (Liz) Durling, Tammy (Kurt) McMillen, Jamie Negus, Kasey (Andrew) Simpson, Jarrod Surine, Meghan, Daniel and Erin Durling; great-grandchildren, Keith and Katie McMillen, Jason and Conner Simpson, Brittney Cunningham and Emily Austin; one sister, Mary Utter of Lodi and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the third floor medical staff at CMC and Pastor Dennis Christiansen who provided the utmost in compassionate care and support during Gladys’ final days.

Gladys will always be remembered for the love she gave others. Her elder years were richly blessed by her residency at the Bixby Home and Beechtree Care Center.

A Memorial Service will begin at 11:00 am on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, 4443 Seneca Road, Trumansburg with the Rev. Dennis Christiansen officiating.

The family asks those who wish to remember Gladys in the form of a contribution to kindly consider the Village of Trumansburg Fire Department, Attn. Jason Fulton, 56 E. Main St, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
