Gordon F. Sayles of Newfield passed away on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the age of 69.
Gordon was born in Ithaca, NY on November 7, 1953, a son of the late John F. and Ruth A. (nee Knapp) Sayles. He graduated from Newfield High School and worked as a machinist at Almanco Inc. in Spencer, NY which was owned by his father, as well as working at other machine shops in the area. After attending Tompkins County Community College, he remained in the area for many years working in the greenhouse at Early Bird Farms in Ithaca for 22 plus years. A lover of darts, an avid reader, woodworking, and walking local trails he found his peace at home among the trees in Newfield. A self-taught carpenter who built his own home and used his skills to renovate and repair many buildings and homes, helping people gave him great joy. When asked he’d show up for people and never turned down any task or challenge. In his free time, he enjoyed attending new car and boat shows.
Gordon is survived by his siblings, Evelyn (Bernard) Hewitt, Carol Anderson, John (Darla) Sayles, Barbara Murphy and Deborah Gellene; an aunt, Lucille (George) Sayles; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends were part of his life. In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Sayles in 2004.
The family will be present to receive friends on Friday March 17th from 10:00-11:00 am at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home. A memorial service will immediately follow at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Brookdale Assisted Living facility and Hospicare Residence for their care and support. The family asks those that would like to make a contribution in Gordon’s memory to kindly consider American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or by planting a tree in his memory.
