Harold A. Wright, lifelong resident of Trumansburg passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the age of 91.
Harold was born in Ithaca on November 21, 1925, a son of the late Arthur W. and Pauline (Marshall) Wright. He left high school and joined the United States Navy to serve his country during World War II. Before being honorably discharged in 1946, Harold went through training at Sampson Naval Base and served on several special missions. Upon returning to Trumansburg, he owned and operated Wright Contracting for many years before retiring.
An active member of the community, Harold was a member of the Church of Epiphany, Trumansburg Rotary, National Rifle Association, Trumansburg Masonic Lodge 157, Ducks Unlimited, American Legion Post 770, and the Ovid VFW. He had served as a Past Commander for the American Legion Post 770 and was the Chairman of New York State American Legion Baseball.
The quintessential “man’s man,” Harold could talk baseball, hunting, and fishing all day. While he hunted all types of game including deer and ducks, his greatest passion was hunting all types of water fowl. An avid Yankees fan and Republican, Harold attended many games over the years and owned a collection of various Yankees memorabilia that he proudly displayed at home. He took great pride in caring for his property and providing for his family.
Harold is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sue Wright of Trumansburg; three children, Connie (Harry) Washut of Buffalo, Wyoming, David Michael ( Carol) Wright of Interlaken, and Patricia (Jim) Jones of Interlaken; four grandchildren, Scott (Stacey) Holden, Victoria (Mark Warren) VanNederynen, Eric (Alicia) Wright, and Thomas (Krystal Hager) VanNederynen; ten great grandchildren, Madison, William, and Tyler Holden, Niko and Tatum Warren, Kaylee, Blake, and Lilly Wright, and Hannah and Jack Harold VanNederynen; beloved dog, Pearl; special nephew, Barry Chapman; and several nieces and nephews. A special thank you to Dawn Reeves and Marcia Lion for their endless support and unconditional love. In addition to his parents, Harold was preceded in death by a grandson, Travis Vorhis; three sisters; and a brother.
The family will be present to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, May 26, 2017 at Sampson Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 6632 Route 96A, Romulus. A reception will follow from 3:30 to 6:00pm at the Trumansburg American Legion Post 770, 4431 East Seneca Road, Trumansburg.
