Irene D. Hubbell of Enfield passed away at Cayuga Medical Center with her daughters and granddaughters by her side on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the age of 94.
Irene was born September 14, 1929, in Queens, NYC, the daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie (Bakó) Dean. When she was a teenager, the family moved from St Albans, Queens, NY to a farm in Enfield, NY. After graduating from Ithaca High School in 1947, she began her lengthy working life in an office at GLF, then worked in accounting at Robinson Carpenter and later at the Ithaca branch office of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. When the branch office transferred out of Ithaca in the mid-1970s, she went to work as a bookkeeper for Phil White at White Nurseries in Mecklenburg, NY, later becoming the bookkeeper for the Village Greenhouse in Trumansburg, NY, where she retired from in the mid-1990s.
Irene was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She played many many games of UNO with her beloved daughter, Laurie, and read many story books to her beloved granddaughters when they were little girls.
She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and canned the produce from her garden for many years. Her hobbies included crossword and jigsaw puzzles, reading mystery and spy novels, playing piano (she served as the pianist at Enfield Methodist Church for many years), an interest in geology, and watching and identifying the many birds that came to the backyard feeders. Up until two days before her passing, some of her favorite daily pastimes were keeping up-to-date with current events, playing solitaire, reading books, and watching movies on her iPad.
Irene is survived by her four children, Ellen Seeley, Richard D Hubbell, James Hubbell, and Laurie Hubbell; five grandchildren, James “Jay” and Christopher Hubbell, Kathleen (Bernie) Cottrell, Elisabeth Knapp, and Mollie Seamon; several great grandchildren; a sister, Margaret (Harry) Austin; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 2012; and a sister, Mary Jane Harris.
A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, June 28, 2024 at Grove Cemetery in Trumansburg. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those that would like to make a contribution in Irene’s memory to kindly consider the Franziska Racker Center, 3226 Wilkins Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
