James L. Baker

July 11, 1933 — February 20, 2025

Ithaca

James L. Baker, Sr., 91, of Ithaca, NY, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025, with family by his side, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, and farming. Born the eldest son of the late Daniel and Alice Baker, James was a man whose life was defined by dedication—to his work, his loved ones, commitment to doing things well, and his unwavering belief in Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his beloved wife and lifelong partner, Phyllis P. Baker. Together, they shared 70 wonderful years of marriage, raising three children: Jamie (Jenny), Jonathan (Doreen), and Louise (Peter Moore). His love and wisdom extended to his five grandchildren—Tori, Hannah, Jessica, Granville, and Jacqueline—and his five precious great-granddaughters, who brought him endless joy. In addition to their children, they established Sweyolakan Farms to be a successful farm for multiple generations.

James is also survived by his special siblings, Mary Earlandt and Rick (Carol) Baker, as well as many dear friends in Ithaca, NY, Estero, FL, and beyond.

A man of the land, James was an award-winning farmer whose passion for agriculture and mentorship shaped many lives. He was named the 1953 National 4-H Champion for his pioneering soil conservation work and earned the title of Farmer of the Year. He, along with Phyllis, were founding members of the Twenty-Thirty Young Farmer Club that continues to impact the region with the legacy of the region’s brightest and best farmers—and now their children.

Beyond accolades, he found fulfillment in guiding those eager to learn, always leading with integrity and a desire for excellence.

His devotion to faith was a cornerstone of his life. A member of both McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers, FL, and West Hill Community Church in Ithaca, NY, James served in various capacities throughout his lifetime, always giving praise to his Lord and Savior.

Those who knew him will fondly remember his love for Ford trucks, his steadfast values, and his sweet tooth. Though Phyllis’ apple pie was his undeniable favorite, the debate over second place—chocolate or cookies—remains unresolved.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. In honoring James’ memory, may we carry forward his commitment to faith, family, and doing all things well.
