ITHACA-James “Jim” R. Geletka, 85, an Ithacan since 2015, died peacefully in Ithaca on June 15, 2024. Jim and his wife Carol Cohen moved to Ithaca from the Washington, D.C., area to be close to family and enjoy the beautiful Finger Lakes region.
Jim was a talented potter who quickly immersed himself in the local pottery community at the Ithaca Clay School, where he designed his teapot masterpieces and taught classes. Before the Clay School, Jim was an award-winning potter with his beloved Glen Echo Pottery in Washington, D.C. At both studios, he inspired so many—some of his unique techniques live on in the creations of new and seasoned artists. His dear friend and mentor, Jeff Kirk, offered invaluable guidance, instruction, and love.
Jim suffered a severe stroke in 2018, curtailing his ability to continue his masterful work. However, he and Carol found other outlets for his indomitable spirit and art and music appreciation. Jim was a virtual encyclopedia of musical genres and artists.
Many friends called Jim a “Renaissance man” because he was interested in diverse topics, including politics, current events, motorcycles, fishing, fine food, disability rights and policy, travel, and a love for obscure museums. His love of the “perfect” gin martini was legendary. He was the consummate ‘handyman’ known to family and friends for his ability to trouble shoot any home maintenance issue.
Over a 45-year career in the disability policy and rights field in Washington, D.C., Jim was committed to supporting the rights of persons with disabilities. Many recall his unwavering zeal when it came to fighting for what was right and fair.
Most importantly, Jim possessed inner warmth, light, and compassion and enriched the lives of everyone who knew and loved him. He was the consummate gentleman with a wicked sense of humor and a kind and gentle soul.
Jim will be missed by all who knew and loved him, especially his wife, Carol Cohen; stepsons Seth (Allison Romano) Cohen and David (Kim Braun) Cohen; and adored grandchildren, Alexander, Harper, Miles, Kamryn, and Leo. He also leaves behind his brother, Joe; a sister, Barbara; a cousin, Catherine, and his former wife, Janice McCall.
Thank you to the staff at Bridges Cornell Heights for their compassion and affection for Jim, and to family and friends for their unwavering support, love, and kindness during many challenging times. Though the end is never easy, the memories are glorious, bountiful and grand. May his memory be a blessing.
