Jean H. (Huhn) Powell

Jean H. Powell, age 92, longtime resident of Powell Road, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024 at Seneca View Nursing in Montour Falls.

Jean was born in Rochester on December 20, 1931, a daughter of the late Norman and Helena (nee Hayes) Huhn. She was married to David Powell on Feb. 23, 1952, and together they operated Maple Leaf Farm on Powell Road while raising their family of 5 children. Jean worked for the Tri-Village Pennysaver, and taught home economics with Cornell Cooperative Extension and served as secretary of PRI, all while maintaining a farming household that included gardening, canning, milking and field work. In their retirement, David and Jean camped in Florida during the winter and volunteered with the Interlaken Historical Society, Jean also enjoyed all types of crafting.

Jean’s home was the gathering place for her family as it grew with marriages, grandchildren and great grandchildren, always devoting her love and attention to making every event special.

She is survived by her children, Sue (JR) Westervelt of Ovid, Barb (Dar) Smith of Ovid, Mark (Debbie) Powell of Fredonia, Nancy (Gordon) Owenby of West Seneca and Julie (David) Thompson of Seneca Falls; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Todd) Porter, Stacey (Tom) Lavarnway, Brian (Samantha) Smith, James (Marissa) Smith, Kristen (Michael) Early, Greg Smith and Dan Popielarski, Brad (Shelby) Powell, Chloe (Justin) Patrick, Stephanie (Rich) Danieu, Kimberly (Kevin) Meegan, Lexi Thompson and Kelly Thompson; great grandchildren, Bailey, Wyatt, Easton, Sydney, Benjamin, Emma, Madison, Andrew, Charlee, Mara, Meena, Aiden and Ava; her brother, Jack (Sandy) Huhn; sister-in-law, Peggy Powell, and many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, David in 2007, and by her brother-in-law, Gordon Powell.

The family will receive friends at Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street in Trumansburg from 5:00 to 7:00pm on Thursday, June 20. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Francis Solanis Catholic Church in Interlaken at 10:00am on Friday, June 21, 2024. Prayers of committal will be held at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken.
