John I. Sincebaugh

d. July 4, 2014

John “Jack” Sincebaugh of Ithaca passed away at Hospicare surrounded by family on Friday, July 4, 2014 at the age of 87.

Jack was born in Ithaca and grew up in Trumansburg, a son of the late Harold and Beula Terwilligar Sincebaugh. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II, and was stationed in Manila, Philippines. Jack founded Finger Lakes Construction Company over 50 years ago, and incorporated in 1979 to FLC Contractors Inc., operating the business alongside his brother, Joe, and nephew, Wayne. Jack and his company were an intricate part in numerous excavation and earthwork projects for many places in Ithaca including Cornell University, Cayuga Medical Center, Borg Warner, and the villages of Cayuga Heights and Lansing. He was a 58 year member of the Operating Engineers Union.

Jack was an avid outdoorsman, and his love and expertise for hunting and fishing are well known and respected. He enjoyed hunting duck, turkey, and deer, and was particularly happy hunting elk in Arizona, preferring a bow to a rifle. Jack also loved fishing on Lake Okeechobee, Florida and across the Great Lakes. Locally, he enjoyed fishing on Cayuga Lake from his second home, which he and his company built, near Aurora. Jack also owned FLC Sporting Goods, a hunting and fishing store that sold firearms, and sporting supplies, issued hunting and fishing licenses, and held big buck contests.

Jack is survived by his wife, Cherie Sincebaugh; five children, John (Catholen) Sincebaugh, Cheryl (Robert) Oltz, Debbie (David) Maycumber, Marcie (Howard) Leib, and Lesa (Harry) Gold; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brother, Lawrence “Joe” (Beatrice) Sincebaugh; sister, Julia (Russell) Sexton; sister in law, Betty Sincebaugh; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two brothers, Harold and Donald Sincebaugh, and by his nephew, Michael Sincebaugh.

The family will be present to receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00pm on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at St. James Catholic Church, 17 Whig Street, Trumansburg, where Jack served as an altar boy. A Mass will immediately follow at 5:00pm at the church. Prayers of Committal and Military Honors will follow in St. James Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks those who wish to make a contribution in Jack’s memory to kindly consider Hospicare, 172 East King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
