L. Smith, Phyllis

d. September 2, 2003

Phyllis L. Smith of Montour Falls, formerly of Trumansburg, passed away at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility in Montour Falls on Tuesday, September 2, 2003 at the age of 83.

Born on June 11, 1920 in Elmira, Phyllis was the daughter of William and Blanche Davidson Ewald. Following graduation from Elmira Free Academy in 1939 she was employed by J.C. Penny's in Elmira and by Montgomery Wards in Elmira and Ithaca. Phyllis also worked at Ridley's Book Bindery in Ithaca for several years.

Phyllis was a quiet woman who appreciated the serenity of watching birds, especially humming birds, and the miracle of flowers and plants as she made them flourish with her "green thumb". She was also an exceptional cook both at home in her kitchen and over the campfire on the family's many camping excursions. Phyllis cherished every moment that was spent with family, especially her grandchildren who brought sunshine into her life. She devoted countless hours to the care of her grandchildren over the years as they laughed, played cards and accepted the precious crocheted gifts that Phyllis made with her loving hands. Her warm and caring smile will be forever embedded in the hearts of those close to Phyllis.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her daughter Lorraine and by her husband of 63 years, Melvin C. Smith. She is survived by two sons, Ronald of Parkersburg, West Virginia and Richard (Julie) of Oswego; five grandchildren, Lorie, Brett, Stacie, Holly and Ronald, Jr.; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Phyllis's wishes, private family services will be scheduled at a later date.

The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg. 1-888-534-5446.
