Lawrence E. “John” Swank of Trumansburg passed away at Cayuga Ridge on Monday, August 5, 2024 at the age of 91.
Lawrence was born on March 6, 1933 in Eagles Mere, Pennsylvania, a son to the late Hurley and Laura (Wilson) Swank. He honorably served his country in the Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954. Following his discharge he worked for many years at the Sampson Army Depot as a line mechanic and truck driver. Lawrence enjoyed tinkering on anything mechanical and fixed lawn mowers for many years. He was an active member of the Lake Cemetery Association and First Baptist Church where he once was a deacon and member of several committees. Lawrence loved going to the Tuesday produce auctions, often sharing his winnings with family members. He was a staple at several coffee clubs and diners in the area including Falls Tavern and the Route 96 Diner.
Lawrence is survived by his children, Larry (Claudia) Collins, Sebastian “Sam” Swank, Michael Swank, and Heather Nickles; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother, Hurley (Linda) Swank; sister in law, Joyce Swank; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Swank; daughter, Barbara Swank; and siblings, Ruth Beattie, Gordon Swank, Lamonte Swank, and Sarah Grover.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, August 17th, 2024 at First Baptist Church, 4443 East Seneca Road, Trumansburg. A Graveside with military honors will follow at Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken.
