LeRoy V. Wollney of Enfield passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at the age of 98.
Born in Trenton, Michigan, on June 21, 1924, LeRoy was the son of the late Constantine and Cora Mae (nee Baron) Wollney. Leroy was initially a conscientious objector at the beginning of WW II. He served in a CO camp in Oregon, surveying public land. In 1944 he chose to join the United States Army Medical Corps, and served from 1944 to 1947. In the Medical Corp, he was in charge of trains which transported wounded soldiers. He then attended Michigan Tech and Olivet College, before transferring to the New School for Social Research in New York City. There he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and met his future wife, Kaye. They were married in 1950.
LeRoy worked for 38 years in New York City for the marketing research firm of Erdos and Morgan. He retired in 1989 from his position as Vice President of Foreign Surveys.
Kaye and Roy lived in Greenwich Village in the early 1950s, and subsequently moved to Staten Island. In addition to his work at Erdos and Morgan, he volunteered at Daytop Village, a drug rehabilitation center. He played a supportive role with Camp Fire and with Bethel United Methodist Church.
After moving to Enfield, LeRoy became active in his community serving on the advisory committee for the Office of the Aging, and on the board at Gadabout. He also volunteered at the Enfield Food Pantry, Area Congregations Together, and at Forest Home Chapel. Roy helped with the renovation of Forest Home Chapel’s parsonage, and construction of the original Sciencenter, as well as its 2008 additions.
LeRoy’s hobbies included stamp collecting, photography and gardening. While in NYC he was active in UN philatelic events, where he mentored young collectors and made some close friends. Roy enjoyed photography personally and semi-professionally. Once he moved to Enfield he indulged his lifelong love of gardening, first almost homesteading (lots of tomatoes, squash, and beans) and later enjoying flower gardening and planting trees. He was a member of the Liberty Hyde Bailey Garden Club.
LeRoy is survived by three children, Clayton (Janyce), Dana (Carol), and Gwen (Margaret); four grandchildren, Alaric (Megan), Seth, Vaughn, and Jenna; and two great grandchildren, Jordan and Paige.
A private burial will be held at Greensprings at Leroy’s request.
Memorial donations in LeRoy’s memory may be directed to Forest Home Chapel.
