Henrietta Melissa Brown
Age 90, a lifelong resident of Jacksonville, NY, and former resident of the Alterra Sterling House, passed away at the Oak Hill Manor, in Ithaca, on Sunday, December 26, 2004.
Born in Jacksonville, NY, the daughter of Manley Clarkson Brown and Florence Tichenor Brown, she grew up with her family in the community and loving animals, gardening and farming. She also loved her family, and children and to travel. She was Valedictorian of the Trumansburg high school class of 1931 and a lifetime member of the Jacksonville Community United Methodist Church and member of the United Methodist Women. She was a compassionate caregiver for her parents and siblings in their later years, and served as a bonding "hub" of the family.
Henny worked as an employment councilor for the New York State Employment Service, in Ithaca, and was a retired member of the Civil Service Employee's Association. In the later years of her career, she worked as an employment councilor in area schools, assisting students entering the work force.
Family and friends are invited to call Wednesday, December 29, at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South St., Trumansburg, NY, where visiting hours will be held from 1 O:OO-IIAM; with a funeral service directly following at 11 :OOam; the Rev. Billie Jean Melton officiating. Prayers of Committal will follow at the Grove Cemetery.
She is predeceased by her parents, and by brothers; William Roland Brown, John Raymond Brown, Frederick Tichenor Brown, a sister; Rev. Elma Beatrice Brown Townsend; nephew, Manley Clarkson Brown, and niece, Phyllis Brown McGuire. Survivors include nieces and nephews, John Brown, Rev. Theodore Townsend, Howard Brown, Jane Townsend Coffey, Jeanette Brown Hylan, Linda Brown Fusaro, and Susan Brown Matson.
