Margaret N. Gutelius

d. November 7, 2016

Margaret N. Gutelius, age 98, died on November 7, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Polly Gutelius.

She grew up in Beirut, Lebanon, the daughter of Presbyterian missionaries. After being educated at Oberlin College and Columbia School of Nursing, she joined her husband, Stanley K. Gutelius, MD in his medical practice serving the Trumansburg community for 31 years before retiring to Sun City Center, Florida.

She was very active in her church in many different capacities and, being especially fond of music, sang in the church choir until she was 96.

Her family was proud of her sense of peace and justice and her activities for civil rights including the March on Washington in 1963. Her talents for pie baking and superb knitted sweaters were great gifts to her family. She also enjoyed boating on Cayuga Lake and the Rideau Lake System. She raised the cutest Scottish Terriers and one was born on a boat trip! She was quiet and humble and determined to help others.

She is survived by 5 children, Stan, Polly, and Jim Gutelius of upstate New York, Cathy Rathmell and Barb Carver of Sun City Center, Florida; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

For those wishing to remember Margaret, gifts can be sent to the SPCA of Tompkins County, the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses, or to a charity of one’s choice.

There will be a family memorial service at a later date.
