Mary Margaret (Carney) Overslaugh of Trumansburg passed away with a heart full of love at Hospicare surrounded by her family on Saturday, December 3rd at the age of 77.
Mary was born in Clifton Springs, New York, the only daughter of the late Edward and Edna (Hinds) Carney. She began working immediately after graduating from high school. Most of her working years were spent employed by the Ithaca City School District. Mary touched many lives in the school district as she worked in many locations over the course of her 32 years of service. She is remembered fondly for her helpfulness and kindness.
Mary volunteered much of her time after retirement, working for 16 years at the Gemm Shop in Trumansburg. Throughout the years, co-volunteers from the Gemm Shop, the “Dinner Dollies,” “Lunch Bunch,” friends, and her many lifelong friends gave Mary some of her most cherished friendships and memories. Those that knew Mary understood her strength, her pride in her family, her work ethic and how she valued friendship.
Mary is survived by five children, June Overslaugh, Gordon “Jake” (Mark Woods) Overslaugh, Mary (Jim) Spicer, Deborah ( John) Grunder, and Margaret (Jerry Dietz) Philipson; six grandchildren, Nicole (Carl) Hubbell, Erin Philipson, Alison Grunder, Lucas Albertsman, Jane Philipson, Austin Grunder, and Jerry Spicer; great granddaughters, Carlee Quinn and Paxton Rae Hubbell and Delaney and Kennedy Spicer; three sisters in law, Bonita and Shirley Carney, and Barb DeCook; dear friend, Donna Parker; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Overslaugh; and three brothers, William, John, and Edward Carney.
The family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm on Tuesday, December 6th at the Ness-Sibley Funeral Home, 23 South Street, Trumansburg. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, December 7th at the funeral home. Prayers of committal will be held at St. James Cemetery.
The family would like to personally thank the efforts of longtime friend Carol Osgood and the remarkably compassionate staff and volunteers of Hospicare for helping make Mary's last days comfortable. The family asks those that would like to make a contribution in Mary’s memory to kindly consider the Gemm Shop, 17 W. Main Street, Trumansburg, NY 14886 or Hospicare, 172 E. King Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.
