Mildred C. Smith

Mildred Caddie Harrington, Predmore, Smith was born January 20, 1913 and passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Seneca View Skilled Nursing Facility at Schuyler County Hospital after a brief illness.

A 1930 graduate of Odessa High School, Mildred was inducted into Odessa's Athletic Hall of Fame for her membership on the only girl's basketball team to go undefeated for an entire season. During the war years she worked at Sampson Air Force Base, riding a bus there from Trumansburg. Mildred also taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Smith Valley. She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Trumansburg having served on many boards and as a Sunday School Teacher. Mildred served outstandingly for many years as a Home Health Aide. In later years she also worked for the Office For The Aging, served as Assistant Manager at Juniper Manor, was a member of the Trumansburg Senior Citizens and volunteered at the Ulysses Historical Society.

Mildred will be cherished and remembered always for her inner strength, courage and gentle sweetness. She was well known as a compassionate being to every life she touched and would go out of her way to help anyone who was in need. The good deeds she did for others will stay in our hearts forever. Her unique willingness to put others ahead of herself (along with her quick wit and Irish sense of humor) is her legacy to her family and friends and will forever leave an imprint on our souls.

She was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Caddie Johnston Harrington, her husbands William Predmore and Charles V. Smith, as well as her brothers Charles, George, Paul, Jeremiah Harrington and sisters, Agnes Chapman/Hodge, Kathryn Thorpe, and Thelma Fulkerson.

She is survived by her sons Paul W. Predmore, David (Amy) Smith and Richard F. Smith; daughter Eleanor (Jack) Ellsworth; grandchildren Eleanor Liebson, Jack

Ellsworth III, Paul D. Predmore, Kandy Avery, Debbie Burns, Shelby Piotti, Scott Smith, Shannon Albrecht, Christopher Predmore, Stacy Wood, Colleen Predmore, Jeremy Smith, and Adam Smith; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law Thalia Harrington.

Mildred's family extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Shern Hart for her friendship and compassion over the years.

The family will be present to receive friends from 1-2 pm on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at the First Baptist Church, 4443 E. Seneca Rd, Trumansburg. A Memorial Service will immediately follow, at the church, beginning at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Frank Adams officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family's wish is that contributions in Mildred's memory be directed to either The First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 686, Trumansburg, NY 14886 or to the Trumansburg Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 418, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
