Pauline M. Higgins

d. August 18, 2009

Pauline M. LaPoint Higgins, of 24 Elm Street, Trumansburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children at Beechtree Care Center on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the age of 86.

Pauline was born in Ithaca, New York on January 7, 1923 to the late Arthur Donald and Mabel Marie (Morrow) LaPoint. She married Ralph LeRoy Higgins on December 19, 1940 and she lived in the Ithaca and Trumansburg area all of her life. During World War II, Pauline and her husband were active in the civil defense as spotter's watching the skies for enemy aircraft. She also was a charter member of the local women's singing group, Harmony Falls.

Pauline was known throughout the village for her warm heart and was often called upon to care for the sick and invalid. She was always ready with a needle and thread to alter clothing for anyone who asked and made many beautiful hand crafted crocheted items. Pauline also was a long-time volunteer in the Medical Records Department at Cayuga Medical Center. She also enjoyed reading a good book, putting together puzzles, and watching NASCAR. Her sharp sense of humor, vibrant personality, and wit will be missed by all who knew her.

Pauline is survived by her four children, Judith (William) Cuyle of Danby, Bruce Higgins of Trumansburg, Connie (Roy "Joe") Ike of Interlaken, and Linda (John) Reed of Cortland; two grandsons, Allen Higgins and his best friend Gina and her daughter Gianna, and Robert (Shelby) Higgins; two great-grandchildren, Irene and Cheyenne; a sister, Marilyn Seely; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, Pauline was preceded in death by her husband Ralph in 1998; three sisters, Ardis DeMund, Helen Withers, and Geraldine McChesney; and two brothers, Arthur LaPoint and Donald LaPoint.

Pauline's family wishes to express deep appreciation to Berta Schott for her tender, loving care to Pauline and to the staff of Beechtree Care Center with the assistance of Hospice for their care of Pauline.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at the Trumansburg United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Losey officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the services in the Fellowship Hall at the church. Burial will be private at the family cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations in Pauline's memory be directed to the Trumansburg Volunteer Fire Co., EMS, PO Box 418, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
