Trumansburg-
Allan R. "Shorty" Grant passed away peacefully at home with family at his side after a long battle with cancer. He was 69. Born in the town of Hector, NY on June 5, 1934 to Fred and Frances Grant, he lived his life in the Trumansburg area. Shorty grew up on Chicken Coop Hill on the family farm. He learned early what hard work was.

F.F.A. was an important part of his high school years before graduating from Trumansburg Central School in 1951. Some years later, he shared his farm responsibilities with driving truck for Alling Transfer and Grayvann Lines. In 1963, he married Marjorie Brown. He and his brother, Robert, started their black top business, Brothers Improvement, later branching out with his own construction company.

In 1971, Shorty and Marge bought the Barangus, his pride and joy. Through long hours, hard work and good friends, they made it the success it is today.

Shorty always enjoyed a good time and in the middle 1970's he formed his baseball team and joined the Beer Keg League, bringing home a few trophies and a lot of fun to Barangus. In 1996 he had his last Horse Pulling contest, that he held in their backyard. He was a member of the Horse Pulling Assn. Shorty also enjoyed his membership at the Interlaken Sportsmen's Club.

In 2001, he asked his niece, Ginger Mosher, to join him as his health was failing. His intelligence and experience guided her into a new venture, along with the support of the rest of her family. Up until a few weeks ago, he still enjoyed working the morning coffee hour at the bar with "his guys". He took great pride in his 14 acre yard. You could see him on a mower most anytime and he always gave special care to his horseshoe pits. His cheery personality, light heartedness, quick wit and intelligence will leave a huge void in all of us. Everyone knew if they had a problem or something they couldn't remember, Shorty's mind never failed them.

Shorty was always ready to lend a helping hand and had most anything anyone needed for whatever. He was always ready to forgive and forget. His famous sayings, "I know nothing" and "pay no tention" will forever be heard. His love for all people was a quality that was instilled in him from the time he was a child through his parents and the Perry City Friends Church. He was a life-member of the church and had participated in Sunday School and Youth Fellowship. Shorty especially enjoyed family gatherings with a "more the merrier" attitude. At times he had been seen coming through the door in his Santa suit with a sack full of toys. He was dearly loved by his family and many friends. The young people had an extra special place and understanding in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Robert W. Grant and Richard C. Brooks, of Trumansburg, niece Rita Grant of Trumansburg, nephew, Robert Grant, Jr. of North Carolina. Shorty is survived by sisters, Jean Donahue and Judy Nichols Haviland of Trumansburg; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Brooks and Helen Grant of Trumansburg; nieces and nephews, Thomas Donahue, John Donahue, Ginger Mosher, Rebecca Updike, Barbara Kelley, Brenda Lincoln, Carol Kerchner, all of Trumansburg and Michael Grant of Rochester and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will be present to receive their friends at the First Baptist Church, 4443 East Seneca Road, Trumansburg on Monday, March 1, 2004 from 1-3 pm. Services will be held at the church on Monday at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Pete Hood officiating. A reception will follow the services at the Barangus in Trumansburg.
