James R. Free of 4586 McIntyre Rd, Mecklenburg went home to be with his Lord on Monday, March 3, 2003 at the age of 59.
Born in Syracuse, New York on January 14, 1944, Jim was the son of George and Doris Jackson Free. Following graduation from the Ithaca High School in 1961, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Jim received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy on October 17, 1966.
Jim was employed by Cornell University for 3 years before accepting a position with Ithaco, where he worked for 27 years. For the past 8 years Jim was a dedicated associate at D.L. Instruments, working throughout his illness until February 21st.
He seemed to carry many of the guiding principles learned in his home, church and the Boy Scouts with him throughout life. Jim always left time for his wife and children as was evidenced by their many camping excursions together. He could repair anything around the home and was dubbed Mr. Fix-It, but when the work was finished Jim would spend time reading his Bible, set off on a long hike or return to a favorite fishing spot.
Membership in the Bethel Grove Bible Church was an instrumental part of Jim's life. He was active in any capacity that was requested and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Men's Prayer Group.
He was preceded in death by his brother Stuart Free. Jim is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Sylvia P. Free of Mecklenburg; a daughter, Katherine E. Free of Lansing; a son, Andrew K. (Stephanie) Free of Waynesville, Missouri; a granddaughter, Allie M. Free of Waynesville, Missouri; a sister, Pat (Richard) Poyer of Fayette; a brother, Roger Free of New York City; a sister-in-law, Ann Free of Altamont and many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Bethel Grove Bible Church, 1763 Slaterville Road in Ithaca on Saturday, March 8, 2003 at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Chuck Tompkins and the Rev. Dave Jones officiating.
The family will be present to receive their friends, at the church, on Saturday from noon to 2:00 pm.
